Eligibility Requirements for Canadian Post Graduate Work Permit

The great thing about a Post Graduate Work Permit is that you don’t need or require LMIA (Labour market impact assessment) to work. The length of a PGWP depends on the length of the education program. Here’s exactly what you should know:

1. You must be at least 18 years old and be enrolled in an active study program for at least 8 months (Advised to enroll in at least a two-year program or two consecutive one-year programs).

2. You must have proof of valid status during the time of application – A letter of Completion and Official Transcripts.

3. You have to submit evidence that you have completed academic or professional training at a Canadian institution. The program must have been at least 8 months long and led to a degree, diploma, or certificate.

4. You must maintain active status as a full-time student throughout your study.

5. You must possess a signed letter and transcript from a DLI to confirm that you meet the requirements to demonstrate completion of the school program.

A post-graduate work permit can only be granted once in a lifetime and students who are receiving academic funding from Canadian Global Affairs are ineligible to apply. Other ineligible applicants include applicants that;

1. A Completed majority of their study program through distant learning (Except for public policy under COVID rules)

2. Was enrolled in a course of study delivered by an institution that isn’t Canadian even though it’s located in Canada or a Designated Learning Institute (DLI). Regardless of the amount of time spent in Canada, this makes you ineligible to apply.

Once you’ve confirmed your eligibility, it’s time to get your documents ready for application. What would you need?

1. A letter that confirms your completion of a program of study.

2. Your official transcript. Your transcript can be an official copy from the website. If it is not official, then it must be issued with a letter from your DLI for the reasons of providing unofficial transcripts as was done during COVID restrictions.

3. If you took any form of leave, during your study, you may be subjected to higher scrutiny by your issuing officer. The officer will have to determine if you were compliant with all the conditions surrounding your study permit. Until this has been determined, the officer may deem you ineligible.

These are the most basic and important documents that would be required. The officer in charge may choose to request additional documents if deemed necessary. But with all of these, you are sure to have your application on lock.
